Fukuoka is a prosperous port city and Japan’s gateway to the Asian continent, and as the largest city on the island of Kyushu, is an important commercial center.
The port city area of Hakata and the city surrounding the 17 century Fukuoka castle, developed independently of each other on either side of the river Naka. In the year 1889, the cities joined to form the city of Fukuoka which is today one of the largest cities in Japan. Although it is a tranquil city in which to live, it is also the home of many exciting, colorful festivals which attract many visitors.
Fukuoka is the ideal destination for any situation or mood you may find yourself in. Modern shopping centers will lure visitors with international goods, whilst markets invite you to browse the local products. The city is well known for its food carts known as Yatai, which offer many delicious local specialties.
