School of the World Jacó
(111 ratings)
The School of the World offers a varied range of courses combining Spanish lessons with surfing, photography and yoga. These extra activities are usually taught in English and, as you might expect from a school in such a popular surfing spot, the surfing lessons are particular sought after and you will find that both students and teachers are passionate about this sport!
The school building and its neighboring student residence are only five minutes away from the beach and village centre. Inside, the School of the World is tastefully decorated with wooden, ceramic and mosaic elements. There is also a spacious terrace where students like to relax and meet friends after class.
Depending on the time of year, the school offers various creative workshops, including Capoeira classes, cooking sessions, salsa lessons and painting classes. For your free time, the staff also plan various activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, hiking and a crocodile river tour. The School of the World team can help you to plan excursions further afield to explore more of Costa Rica during your stay.

School of the World Jacó - Stefanos
I can only recommend a language course at School of the World in Jacó. I chose to do a Spanish and surfing course but there are more options like photography or yoga. It is also relatively easy to switch courses or do more than one courses.
The accommodation is very good: you have everything you need. The lifestyle is very family-like. You do a lot with the other students and you always meet them at the communal kitchen or the pool. The staff is also very professional.
The teacher was adapting to everyone's individual language knowledge and made learning a lot of fun. After two hours of Spanish lessons, there is another hour of "lab" where you go out and learn interactively. We went to visit traditional restaurants and fruit markets. The surf lessons were great fun. All of the teachers are very professional and are always in a good mood. The nationality and age mix of the students showed a great variety. I had a wonderful time in Jacó and can recommend it to everyone.

Everything worked perfectly!
It was an amazing language course abroad with a very family-like atmosphere at the school. Everyone was very motivated and I even stayed one week longer than originally planned.

The trip to Costa Rica was great, I would go again without hesitation! It was beautiful and every place was unique in its own way.
The schools and all host families were very helpful and took such nice care of me. Surfing was incredible! The instructors were great and you learn quickly and with a lot of fun.
Staying for just one week in the one place has the advantage that you can see many places in a short time but right when I felt a bit at home and had made friends, I had to pack my bags again.
The organization was great and everything worked out perfectly.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank again so much, everything went very well! :-) The school in Jacó is really great, and so is the accommodation. The place itself is a bit exhausting after a while but you usually have some kind of program anyway most of the time.
Best,
Alex

School of the World Jacó - Raphael
Right from the beginning, I have to say, if I were to decide where to do a language course abroad again, I would definitely go to School of the World, Jacó, Costa Rica. I was lucky enough to be able to spend four weeks there doing a Spanish course and learning how to surf. It was an incredible experience. The school staff is extremely friendly and you feel at home immediately. Because of the size of the school, it even has a very family-like atmosphere.
I travelled by myself and got to know a lot of people of different ages within a short time. Loneliness and boredom were unknown concepts from the very beginning. The days were usually well structured: depending on the tides, we started with a surf session or a Spanish class. I took both classes during my entire time at the school and learned from nice surf instructors as well as Spanish teachers.
I am a bit torn about my opinion about Jacó, the small city where the school is located. The city is very American and a bit touristy. Those who expect to stay in a small Costa Rican village will be disappointed. But the tourism also comes with advantages because there is always something to do in Jacó, especially at night.
All together it was outstanding.
Best regards and many thanks,
Raphael

Hola Yalea y Pura Vida :-)!
My trip was great. The atmosphere at the school is very family-like because - at least during my time there - there were only a few students. I was a bit surprised by this at the beginning but I liked it a lot. The lessons were great. The professors are really good. I learnt the most from the communication in real-life situations and it was always a lot of fun trying out new things. The accommodation was okay. It bothered me a bit that I only had a small window, so the air was usually stuffy and it was relatively dark. I spent most of the time outside so it was not that important. Otherwise the infrastructure and cleanliness were absolutely perfect.
About Jacó: When I arrived I thought the place was only for surfers, which is true but is also responsible for the atmosphere in the town. For someone who is looking for the typical Costa Rican nature, this is not the place. I enjoyed the time at the beach and in the sun. All in all, I would definitely recommend this school, especially for people who don’t just want to learn Spanish but enjoy all the things you can do there and the great people.
Muchas gracias por todo!

Four weeks in Jacó mean sun, sea, cool people, good food and, of course, surfing and Spanish ... or simply Escuela del Mundo. Yalea made all of this possible - thank you so much! Afterwards, we travelled with our newly acquired Spanish knowledge through Central America (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Mexico) and at the end: California - a little bit of English was allowed at the end ;-)
