Take an English course in St. Petersburg in Florida, known as 'The Sunshine City' because of its average of 361 days of sunshine per year.
Situated on the Gulf of Mexico coast in the USA's southernmost tip, St. Petersburg (or St. Pete) is best-known for its incredible beaches and sunny weather. Some of the country's most beautiful beaches are within easy reach of the city, such as the pristine white sands of Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach. The Sunken Gardens and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve are also popular attractions. The former is an 100-year-old garden that contains more than 50,000 tropical plants and flowers, while the Nature Preserve features swamps, woodlands and marshes populated by alligators, lizards, turtles and a variety of birds.
In recent years, St. Petersburg has become famous for its fantastic arts' scene. Here you can find outstanding museums, such as the Salvador Dali Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Florida Holocaust Museum and the Morean Arts Center, as well as plenty of small independent galleries. There are various art districts throughout the city where you can see local artists and craftsmen at work.
St. Petersburg also has a reputation for fantastic beer, being home to many craft breweries and bars in which you can sample local produce. The cuisine is influenced by Latin flavors and fresh seafood, particularly shrimp.
St. Petersburg is a fantastic destination for learning English as the accent is very similar to the standard American accent and does not have the strong Southern twang for which its neighboring states are famous. Although there are some residents of Cuban and Mexican origin here, there is not the huge Hispanic community that you find in other parts of Florida. As a result, students of all nationalities will have ample opportunities to practice their language skills outside the classroom as they will find that most locals only speak English.
